As the outgoing river of the Lake is the Blue Nile, the Lake is considered the origin of the Blue Nile, one of the two main tributaries of the Upper Nile. Known to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, the lake has an long history of exposure to the ancient world, and from a very early age, it has been one of the centers of Christianity.
