Stockholm Grand Tour (Downtown, Old Town & Vasa)

There is not space enough to tell you what a great experience having Zenid H. was for us two “Confused Gentlemen” from the USA. We booked a six-hour walking tour of Stockholm with Zenid H, thinking from our pre-trip communication that he would be an ideal guide – we were not wrong! As a reformed journalist from Croatia, Zenid’s ability to communicate his story about Stockholm, Sweeden, Europe, and their relationship to the politics, economics, culture, and sports of the USA is nothing short of extraordinary. Zenid has a wealth of knowledge, one might say almost photographic. He learns from tour participants from all over the world and incorporates thousands of experiences into one of the most interesting and engaging tours I’ve ever had. There is almost no topic that did not capture our interest. The tour began with our taking a tram to the Vasa Museum where we met a cheerful and engaging Zenid. His English is impeccable and nuanced. He ushered us into the museum, pointing out hundreds of little know facts about this remarkable recovery, display, and preservation of this 16th century sailing ship. The comparison between the King of Sweeden’s aspirations for showing power, fierceness, and gold decorations, and our current experience with US leadership was compelling – Hubris sometimes ends in sinking the ship. We took a ferry to old town and learned the history, architecture, politics, and engineering of this fantastic island city. The cost of housing for today’s young home-buyers paralleled in Stokholm and Tulsa, our hometown. We toured the classic photo-stops of the Nobel museum and colorful houses on the hill. We were blessed with the prizes being announced during our time in Stokholm. We moved on to the government buildings, the palace, and deep conversation about differences in republican government and the meaning of democracy and the complexity of a multiple party parliamentary system rather than a two-party government. Both risk tyrannical behavior and stalled governing, maybe. We then moved to the newer parts of the city, shopping areas, pleasant crowds of shoppers and people going about their daily lives. We ended our tour at a restaurant for Swedish meatballs early dinner, completely filled by the best tour and good food.
