My name is Orquidea and I am a private local guide here in Porto, Portugal, numerous winner of "Best European Destination!" I am Portuguese and have lived here my whole life. I became a tour guide because I love meeting foreigners, showing them my country, giving them an insight to Portuguese history, food and culture with informative and personalized tours. Although Portugal is small, it is very diverse allowing you an incredible opportunity to discover all that it has to offer; excellent architecture, delicious food & wine, exciting festivals, great weather, hospitable people and much more and I am here to help experience all of these! I offer tours throughout northern Portugal (Porto, Douro Valley, Guimaraes, Braga, Viana do Castelo, to name a few) and into the centre by request (Coimbra, Aveiro, Fatima, Obidos, Nazare, Lisbon). Not only will you visit the highlights but you will witness the locals, how they live, what they eat, their customs and how the regions have been shaped to reflect by these. Depart Porto en route to Guimaraes, where we will visit the Palace of the Dukes and the 10th century Guimaraes Castle, the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. After, we will to the quaint historical center which is extremely well preserved where the narrow streets of the Medieval quarter are lined with old houses and ornate balconies, tiled churches and historic monuments all leading to the beautiful main square, Largo da Oliveira. Continue the tour to Braga, the capital of Minho province and known as "Portuguese Rome" because of its remarkable collection of religious architecture. Visit the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary; a magnificent site with chapels, caves, ornaments, and beautiful gardens. After a traditional lunch, head to the Se Cathedral; a Gothic/Renaissance structure founded in 1070 including one of the three Gothic chapels, Capela dos Reis. Afterwards, there will be some free time to explore and shop before returning to Porto.
Orquídea was a fantastic tour guide. She speaks excellent English and is friendly and enthusiastic. Our ship was leaving an hour early and Orquídea kindly agreed to start the tour an hour early. We learned so much from her extensive knowledge of Portuguese history. We would highly recommend Orquídea as a tour guide.
Orquidea gave us a tremendous historical oversight putting into perspective the relevance of the Cathedrals, castles, and monuments we saw. She had a great sense of pace in creating a vivid picture of the two cities we visited. A totally enjoyable dialogue about Portugal and its people. And a great lunch spot. Thanks Orquidea.
Orquidea did a great job juggling our visits to the small towns surrounding Porto. We visitied Braga, Guimaraes, Amarante and a winery before returning to Porto. We had a great walking tour in each city along with the history of that area. The day went very fast and we covered many miles. These towns were definitely worth seeing if you are in Porto for a few days. I cn recommend Orquidea for all those interested in the Porto area.
Orquidea was excellent for our Guimarães and Braga tour. We were 3 couples of seniors traveling together. She paced us well and we saw many sights and heard her stories. She found an excellent local restaurant that we really enjoyed. I would recommend her to anyone interested in a private tour.
