I am Karl, a local guide, born and raised in the beautiful British Virgin Islands where I have lived all my life. Sharing the beauty, history and culture of my home is a passion of mine as I truly believe it is a slice of heaven on Earth. As the son of a local historian I grew up taking in the knowledge of our islands and way of life which continues to change with development. Energetic and adventurous by nature I enjoy exploring our Islands and surrounding waters. I am a licensed tour operator with my own transportation, this by law requires me to undergo annual training by the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board in customer service and hospitality. I also am required to take a physical exam annually. A Potter by heart and trade, myself along with my wife and son operate an experience based pottery studio where I teach pottery making, give demonstrations, sell our work and conduct tours. Through my teaching I have developed my natural empathetic abilities. I am usually quite good at "reading the crowd", picking up on the individual needs of those in the group and adjusting my style and pace to match. I was raised with strong moral values and believe in being honest, polite and courteous. I enjoy creating a bond with my guests and have actually made friends with a few that I keep in touch with from time to time. Funny enough I was actually encouraged by a couple that I once guided to look into ToursByLocals. As a tour guide I understand the need to be flexible and I always strive to give guests the best experience possible as I am not only representing myself but my beloved home as well. Tortola has a rich and diverse history. The island has been inhabited by Amerindians, Spaniards, Dutch, British, pirates and now the descendants of African slaves and expatriates from around the world. As a born and raised local who is the son of an historian I am anxious to share this unique history with you. Join me and be privately shuttled in comfort as we visit a variety of museums and historical sites around the island. Get an idea of how development and natural disasters have changed the landscape, take a glimpse into the plantation/colonial period and get a taste of what life was like for Virgin Islanders before the 1960's which saw tourism bringing in modern development. In addition to the main stops, take in some history and local knowledge on the scenic drive between stops. If you are a lover of history or just enjoy learning the culture of other countries then this is definitely an experience for you. Karl was so generous to accommodate us on Christmas Eve. We spent a wonderful day touring various historical sites on Tortola. His family is rooted on the island so his knowledge and connection to its history is extensive and engaging. We have two teen+ children and both of them enjoyed our experience as well. Karl is an outstanding guide--kind and considerate, extremely and personally knowledgeable about the island, including the political and maritime history, the art and artists, and the natural environment and beauty. We enjoyed every minute from his clear and puntual arrival to the last generous minute he gave us. My family booked a tour with Karl for our stop in Tortola off our cruise. What a fabulous way to spend the day! Karl is knowledgable and passionate about sharing the history of his home. He is friendly and answered so many questions we had about the island as the day went on. We got to see several historically and culturally significant sites on the island and have a genuine local lunch. The highlight of the day was meeting Mr. Vanterpool, who is a famous local artist. Great day!
Our family had an absolutely incredible time on our private tour of Tortola with Karl! He was so attentive and made sure every detail of our experience was perfect.
