A walking tour to enjoy this cultural, lively and tasty city
A walking tour in to discover the amazing historic city center of Lecce (called the Florence of the South thanks to the city's abundance of architectural gems and culture; included in the tentative list of Unesco; listed by Lonely Planet in the top ten of the cities to visit). An itinerary through the history of Lecce (from the Roman domination to the baroque architecture), its monuments (churches, palaces, squares, castle, amphitheatre) and artesans (papier-machè, stone carving, etc).
It's also possible to extend the tour with some activities in the surroundings: a winery visit (to enjoy the Negroamaro, Primitivo, Black Malvasia wines made in the wine areas of Salice Salentino, Copertino, Guagnano, Cellino, Nardò, etc. ), a culinary experience (olive oil mill and cheese farm visit, cooking class), a visit to Galatina called the Southern Assisi, Otranto and the stunning mosaics , the area of dolmen and menhir, the lively and picturesque Gallipoli, the baroque and tasty Nardò, the cliffs of Porto Selvaggio.
The city tour includes the most important monuments (Sant'Oronzo square, Roman Amphitheatre, Roman Theatre, Celestini Palace, Holy Cross Basilica with its wonderfull baroque facade, the stunning Duomo square, one of the few "closed" square of Italy) and, if you like, also some palaces (Carafa, Adorno, Marrese, Palmieri-Guarini, etc. ), churches (S. Irene, S. Matteo, S. Chiara, the Greek), Charles V Castle (exterior), the ancient city gates (Napoli, S. Biagio, Rudiae), the Jewish heritage, an apulian eclectic liberty style villa, the Museum Faggiano with more than 2. 000 years of history discovered by accident, the medieval church of San Niccolò and Cataldo.
During the tour we can stop to visit an artisan workshop (to admire the world famous papier-maché, to find the real Made in Italy at an atelier with excellent natural fabrics), to taste the typical "street food" of Lecce (the salty Rustico, the sweet Pasticciotto), a coffee at an artisanal roasting bar, excellent wines, evo, cheese, cold cuts, ice-cream.

A very enjoyable and informative tour around the historic centre of Lecce. Alessandro has a great knowledge of local history and culture that really helped us appreciate the city, plus his wry take on modern Italian life was a wonderful way for visitors to understand more about what it's like to live there today. Highly recommended!
