A trip through 2400 years of defending the home and land

Spend a day, visiting fortifications and castles from the Iron Age to the 14th century. Commence your day with spectacular views across the Welsh Borders from an Iron Age hill fort, dug by hand with antler picks. Move through history, visiting a part of the biggest earthwork in England; Offa's Dyke, built at the time of the Viking invasions. See the might of the Norman conquest at Ludlow and Clun Castles. End your day in the opulent comfort of more settled times, at Stokesay Castle. A fortified manor house, that remains complete virtually as the day it was constructed. Lunch or afternoon tea (or both) can be taken at a number of splendid hostelries.

During the day you will see how the need to defend the home and land changed as well as the techniques and technology used in construction developed.
Ludlow and Stokesay castles are closed in the very coldest winter months but may be viewed from outside. Please contact me to confirm if they are open at the time of your intended tour.

Itinerary

After meeting/ collection:

Start at 09. 30 Bury Ditches Hillfort
11. 00 visit Offa's Dyke at Knighton (Bad weather alternative the Offa's Dyke Centre)

Ludlow Castle is closed in december but may be viewed externally. Stokesay castle is closed in December and has limited opening hours in the winter months. The tour will be adjusted to accomodate this.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: Tour starts and ends near to Craven Arms in Shropshire. I will collect from anywhere with 20 miles of my home in Bewdley, Worcestershire or arrange a meeting/collection at another location by prior agreement

End location: You will be returned to the collection or meeting point unless otherwise arranged. This may involve an additional cost

Duration: 8 hours

In the winter months Ludlow and Stokesay Castles have limited opening. The tour will be modified to take this into account. Please ask for further details when booking, when your particular area of interest can be taken into account and the tour adjusted to suit you.

Transportation

Some walking is needed to get to the feature and view the fortification or castle. The walking is not arduous but good, strong footwear is reccomended and waterproof/windproof clothing and even perhaps an additional warm layer may be useful.

Travel between locations is in my Range Rover, now no longer new but well maintained, and in good condition. It seats four in addition to the driver. If a better or newer vehicle is required, this can be arranged at extra cost.

What’s Included

Collection and return to an agreed location within 15 miles of the start and finish of the tour. Collection and transport can be arranged from a greater distance by prior arrangement. Transport is in my own vehicle and can comfortably accomodate 3 adults. Accomodation and eating venues can be reccomended with pleasure and assistance given in making bookings if needed.

A Recent Review of this tour

It was wonderful. The tour itself was very interesting. We would never have found those places and certainly not in the order in which they make historic sense. Stuart was terrific.
