A trip through 2400 years of defending the home and land
Spend a day, visiting fortifications and castles from the Iron Age to the 14th century. Commence your day with spectacular views across the Welsh Borders from an Iron Age hill fort, dug by hand with antler picks. Move through history, visiting a part of the biggest earthwork in England; Offa's Dyke, built at the time of the Viking invasions. See the might of the Norman conquest at Ludlow and Clun Castles. End your day in the opulent comfort of more settled times, at Stokesay Castle. A fortified manor house, that remains complete virtually as the day it was constructed. Lunch or afternoon tea (or both) can be taken at a number of splendid hostelries.
During the day you will see how the need to defend the home and land changed as well as the techniques and technology used in construction developed.
Ludlow and Stokesay castles are closed in the very coldest winter months but may be viewed from outside. Please contact me to confirm if they are open at the time of your intended tour.

Travel between locations is in my Range Rover, now no longer new but well maintained, and in good condition. It seats four in addition to the driver. If a better or newer vehicle is required, this can be arranged at extra cost.

It was wonderful. The tour itself was very interesting. We would never have found those places and certainly not in the order in which they make historic sense. Stuart was terrific.
