Walking Tour/ 11th century/ Medieval history/ Art/ Castle/ Abbeys/ William the Conqueror/ Food/ Tasting/ Cheeses/ Calvados
Having spent 7 years living in Caen, I will be happy to propose to you various walks through its historic centre that boasts of unsuspected treasures.
In Caen we will see fantastic old churches whose steeples were not touched by the bombing in June 1944. We will discover some new structures as well characterized by extremely particular architectural designs. The castle of William the Conqueror, the duke of Normandy, can not be avoided. It is situated on a rocky outcrop. The highlight of it is the archaeological remains of William's palace, known as the Vieux Palais (Old Palace), and head to the lookout point to enjoy views of the city, dominated by the flamboyant Gothic spire of Church of St-Pierre.
This tour is surprisingly rewarding: you will get pleasure of spending few moments exploring some ancient stones and get a delightful feeling of how the old harmoniously meets the present and new.
During our tour you will learn the significant history of Caen PLUS I will organise some stops for Cheese and Calvados Tasting.
Firstly, let's discover together the medieval part: The Castle built in the 11th century by the most famous of the dukes of Normandy, William the Conqueror; the Abbey for Men that is considered as one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in Normandy. As the city was terribly bombed during the Normand invasion, we will take the narrow paths and streets to see the destruction caused by the Battle of Normandy that took place here during World War II.
From Caen I will take you to the Calvados distillery "Ducy-Sainte-Marguerite" where we will get a guided tour from a specialist with the tasting of the most famous products: cider, pommeau, calvados.

We had a wonderful time on this tour with Svetlana. The tasting part of the tour at a local distillery was both entertaining and fascinating, and we left with both an appreciation for the meticulous processes employed by the distillery and several items we purchased to bring home. Due to my husband's mobility constraints, Svetlana tailored the tour of Caen, which is normally a walking tour, to a nice drive and history lesson though the city, while stopping at several key sites. Highly recommend!
