under the Tuscan sun
Departure from Pienza, Renaissance city planned by the Pope Pius 2nd, very famous to have been planned by a Florentine architect, Bernardo Gambarelli, a pupil of Leon Battista Alberti. Once you start walking along the main street, you can enjoy the fragrance of the pecorino cheese, produced by several cheese farm on the area. We can taste this special cheese before the walk in one of the several specialized shops.
We walk then along a very panoramic road to the nice hill town of Monticchiello, where we have lunch in a cozy trattoria just inside the walls. After lunch we continue on winding dirt roads to Montepulciano, the so-called Pearl of the 1500, whose origins date back to the Etruscan time. Its heart is the piazza grande, on the highest point of the hill, former acropolis now framed by the most significant and relevant monuments, such as the impressive Cathedral. This town is also well known for the vino nobile, a great red DOCG wine. We can taste the wine in one of the several cellars in town.
Nice walk in the most beautiful countryside of Tuscany. Visit to Pienza, Monticchiello and Montepulciano.
