Guided tour to discover Volterra, the oldest city of Tuscany
During the II World War my grandparents moved from Pisa to Volterra to find a safe place. There they meet a family that took care of them. They became friends and more. . . (one of my sisters married one of them 30 years ago).
Volterra is the place where I feel at home, a city with 3000 years of history, born with the name of Velathri thanks to the Etruscan people. On the highest hill of the Cecina valley, in the deepest Tuscany, Volterra looks like a golden city, thanks to the tuff stone used for its buildings. At the Roman times the theater and thermal buildings were born and they are still visible. The most important period was the Middle Ages. Moving through its narrow alleys is like walking in a labyrinth. A real Tuscan jewel.
Alabaster is the treasure of Volterra and together we will know its history through the words of a traveller of the XIX century, Giuseppe Viti (Me!) inside his majestic Palace. Ready?
The guided tour follows a chronological route, starting with the most important Etruscan site in Italy, Porta all'Arco, one of the monumental gates through the Etruscan walls, which still has the key stone to support the arch.
Through the medieval labyrinths we will discover the Roman theater, founded 2000 years ago, the Roman baths and the sumptuous sacred architecture of the Cathedral and the Baptistery. We will dive In the Middle Ages inside the Square of Priors, a symbol of the economy of Volterra in the XIII century, surrounded by the towers of the Nobles.
We will get to know the alabaster in one of the oldest shops in the city.
