The most famous work by Giulio Romano
Started in 1525 and completed after 10 years, Palazzo Te combines the taste of Federico II Gonzaga - who eanted a villa on the outskirts for his own pleasure - and the art of Giulio Romano, the designer and maker of one of the greatest examples of Renaissance Mannerism.
Inside: The Horses' Room, with the portraits of the six best horses of the famous Gonzagas' breeding; Psyche's Room, with ethe extraordinary scene of the wedding banquet between Amore and Psyche; the Giants' Room and the grotto with its flowerbeds and elegant loggia, richly decorated with mysterious scenes. The most impressive fresco is the one in the Giants' Room showing upiter casting down the Olympus the Titans who had dared climb it. It is an allegory of the victory of Charles V over the aristocrats who had made an attempt to his throne. It was commissioned by the Gonzaga to beseech he title of Duke. The dramatic force of the room shocks the visitor while its unscanny acoustics are fascinating.
