This magnificent medieval town was once the 4th most important pilgrimage site in the christian world after Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostella. Still today you can see some pilgrims in the early morning climbing up the 197 steps on their knees, saying a prayer on each step before they reach the sanctuaries with its 8 chapels and churches built by the monks against the steep cliff of Rocamadour! They then enter the troglodyte chapel of our lady of Rocamadour, a black madonna famous for her miracles, and pray to ask for a wish or a miracle to come true or simply ask for forgiveness. Rocamadour has plenty of nice hotels and very good food, it is best discovered with a local guide or you will miss what its all about, trust me, you won't regret your stay in Rocamadour!
