The Main Sights and Main Street

The Rock was formed, more or less in the shape we see it today, by a massive upheaval of the earth about 200 million years ago. While dinosaurs roamed, the earth's plates that formed Africa and Europe collided and a massive lump of Jurassic limestone was forced up from the sea and flipped over. The top ridge of Gibraltar was once far below the sea and is made from millions of compressed seashells.
Not just on the outside but on the inside too! Rainwater filtered through and cracks, fissures, caves and eventually huge caverns including St Michael's Cave were formed.
Those who use the expression 'Solid as the Rock of Gibraltar' can be reminded that it is in fact honeycombed by history - riddled with natural caves and, much later, tunnelled by man to a total of 50km of passages.

First Pillars of Hercules. There at the Pillars you will enjoy the views of North Africa. You will see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, being the only entrance to the Mediterranean. The next stop is St Michaels Cave. This is an amazing, natural, phenomenon which sees thousands of visitors a year wandering through its huge caverns with a few steps and easy access. Next we will go to the top of the Rock where you will see breathtaking views of Gibraltar. Here we will have an interaction with our famous apes. From there we will drive to the north side of the Rock to visit the Great Siege Tunnels, something not to be missed. This site explains a lot of the history of Gibraltar under siege. Next the Moorish Castle the construction of which was commenced in the 8th century AD (possibly AD 711)Then we will give you free time approx 1hrs to 1. 30hrs. We then drive down through the old town Towards the 100 tonne Gun. Then Europe point. 360 degree round the rock and over airport

A Recent Review of this tour

We initially upset that our tour guide wasn't available until the afternoon even though our ship docked in the morning. To our pleasant surprise we couldn't have been happier with how it worked out. The weather was gorgeous in the afternoon and the morning we had a chance to walk the very cute shopping area. Paul was TERRIFIC! Totally upbeat and seemed to genuinely enjoy what he was doing. We all loved the tour. Thank you Paul.
