Gilded Age opulent mansions and grand embassies line the streets of one of Washington DC's most fashionable neighborhoods-- Dupont Circle. On a two-hour walking tour, we'll stroll along Embassy Row and see some of the city's most impressive properties. We'll discuss the architecture, history, stories and scandals that helped shape the Nation behind the doors of the District's most extravagant homes. Please get in touch if you have any specific attractions you'd like to visit in the neighborhood, and I would be happy to customize a tour for you!
We'll begin in the namesake of the neighborhood, Dupont Circle, to talk about the history of the area, how this part of the city took shape and the iconic Dupont Circle Fountain. Then we'll stroll down Embassy Row, taking in the lavish mansions of Washington's Gilded Age elite. We'll discuss the beautiful and varied architecture, and the politicians, society ladies, diplomats, and captains of industry that shaped this grand boulevard. We'll touch on George Westinghouse, Alice Roosevelt Longworth and the Curse of the Hope Diamond, all in the first 20 minutes! We'll also visit the imposing Neoclassical Anderson Mansion, tell stories of the Cosmos Club, stroll past Woodrow Wilson's post-presidency home and find a hidden grave in what locals know as "Poodle Park". Then down the Spanish Steps, to the former home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and local landmark neighbors have dubbed the "The Hobbit House". We'll wrap up outside one of the best-hidden gems in DC, the Phillips Collection.
