Pennsylvania Avenue has been host to inaugurations, protests and celebrations throughout our Nation's history. But the development of this grand boulevard, connecting the Capitol to the White House, is fraught with conflict and intrigue. On a two hour exploration, we'll visit the White House grounds, walk down Pennsylvania Ave, and learn how downtown Washington went from Murder Bay to America's Main Street. Please get in touch if you have any specific attractions you'd like to visit, and I would be happy to customize a tour for you!
Starting in the front yard of the White House in Lafayette Square, we'll discuss the history of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From construction to destruction, fire, flood, collapse and renovation, you'll learn how this famous address has changed throughout history. Then, taking a look at other buildings along Lafayette Square, we'll discuss the presidents, politicians, and power players of all kinds that have lived along this storied block. After exploring the White House neighborhood, we'll stroll down Pennsylvania Ave toward the Capitol Building. Past the hallowed halls and imposing facades of the Willard Hotel, Department of Justice and FBI Headquarters, we can take an optional diversion to the top of the Old Post Tower for a birds-eye view of Washington DC! We'll wrap up outside the Embassy of Canada, in full view of the U. S. Capitol Building and close to the National Mall. There's lots more to see, and I'll be happy to make recommendations or point you in the right direction!
