This stunning building from the 1840's, orginally the US Patent Office, now houses two magnificent Smithsonian Institution museums - the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art museum. On this private guided tour we will see selected highlights from both museums. The Hall of Presidents in the National Portrait Gallery contains a painting of every President - except, at the moment, the current President and his predecessor - they have not got to them yet, but they will! Also a highlight are plaster casts of President Lincoln's face and hands- it is like coming face to face with Abraham Lincoln! Among many other notables who have their portraits here are Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Obama, Marian Anderson and Queen Liliʻuokalani of Hawaii. The Smithsonian American Art museum, under the same roof, has a dazzling array of masterpieces from Colonial times to the present day, with works by John Singleton Copley, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper and a host of others.
We will meet outside the G Street entrance to the museum. We can see the stunning central atrium with a glass canopy recently added by architect Norman Foster and have a brief discussion of the history of the building and the Smithsonian Institution. Then we can visit the National Portrait Gallery for paintings and photos of Civil War generals and the Hall of Presidents. Our journey of discovery will continue in the American Art musuem with superb paintings of Native Americans by George Catlin, astonishing depictions of American landscapes by Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Moran, and Albert Bierstadt. Other works among many others will include paintings by Mary Cassatt and Frederic Remington. Please note that some items may not be on view due to rearrangement or restoration.
