These two Smithsonian museums remind me of going through grandma’s attic: there’s something from every part of the family's backstory but in no particular order and it's not always clear what you've found! But on this tour I'll help you connect the dots, sharing stories to bring the artworks & objects of this wonderful collection to life. We won't focus on American artists or American Art history. Instead we'll focus on the values & fears, and the conflicts & victories preserved in paintings & photos from across the landscape of U.S. history. Together, we'll trace out & explore Visions of America’s Future– from the early Republic, at the close of the frontier & at the start of the current century. We'll look at how everyday art & objects express people’s heartfelt values & insecurities; and at how 19th-century literature (mostly forgotten now) shaped people’s understanding of the world & provided a common vocabulary in public debates over political, technological & social progress.
·We'll start in the light-filled atrium of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, which started as the U.S. Patent Office and now houses the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum. ·After I share some of the storied past of this building (in which both Walt Whitman & Clara Barton once worked), we'll see selected artworks that trace out the rivalry & competition of ideas in science, politics, and the arts that competed for the heart of America & shaped the nation. ·We'll proceed to see some of the only original artworks for which George Washington & Abraham Lincoln posed; a painting from Benjamin Franklin’s house of his friend Benjamin Lay; as well as a panoply of famous Americans from every facet of society–from sports & technology to business & social justice. Depending on what is on display, we could see works by Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, and Jacob Lawrence. My tours can of course be customized to your interests.
