The Smithsonian Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History are both treasure troves of amazing artefacts. We will see selected highlights of both of these. In the American History museum we can view the original Star Spangled Banner, the lunch counter from a Woolworth's store in Greensboro North Carolina where the first sit in for civil rights took place in 1960, a selection of First Ladies' Gowns and Inauguration Day dresses, Dorothy's Ruby Red Slippers from the movie of The Wizard of Oz , the original Teddy Bear and the hat Abraham Lincoln wore to Ford's Theater the night he was assassinated, as well as many other fascinating exhibits. In the Natural History museum we can see the world famous Hope diamond, amazing jewels that belonged to empresses and queens, the Fossil Hall with many dinosaur skeletons, mummies from Ancient Egypt, the Ocean Hall with a huge whale and a giant squid, with numerous other amazing items.
We will meet at the entrance to the Smithsonian Museum of American History, 1300 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20560. See the Star Spangled banner, a monumental statue of George Washington, the portable writing desk on which Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, the lunch counter from Greensboro. Then we can go upstairs to explore Entertainment Nation with Dorothy's slippers, r2D2 and C-3PO from The Return of the Jedi and many other items from movies and TV, go on from there to the First Ladies' Gowns and see a selection of items to do with the Presidents. Walking to the Natural History museum next door, we will view the Smithsonian Castle across the mall, with a brief discussion of the origin and history of the Smithsonian itself. Then we will enter the Natural History museum to see the Hope diamond, the dinosaur skeletons, the mummies and much more! Please note that some items may not be on view due to rearrangement or restoration.
