Did you ever have a walk in your school days that you always wanted to take - but for one reason or another didn't? Well, that's how I thought of this walk. I grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, and we drove everywhere when I was a kid, but I was curious - even anxious - to explore what we were just passing by. Sure people lived back there - or had lived on top of those Palisades along the Hudson! Imagine them, I thought …. Perhaps you've heard of the Mohonk Mountain House? Or even the Catskill Mountain House? But have you heard of the resort Palisades Mountain House? I never knew of it either! And only one of those exists today (and that's Mohonk, near New Paltz, about 80 miles north of us), but I'm sure we can walk to where the Palisades mountain House was. So, let's start out on an adventure - and walk to Tenafly!
Beginning on the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge, we will walk across the bridge - on either the north or south side, depending on which one the Port of Authority of New York has open - and we shall discuss the importance of this bridge and the Hudson River. Much to be discussed! On the New Jersey side, we shall hike up a short set of stairs (virtually the only steep uphill portion of the day's walk), and embark upon the Long Trail, along the top of the Palisades cliffs. This walk provides wonderful views, and your leader will describe the history of North New Jersey and the progress and process of its development as a premier suburban community. At a point approximately 4. 7 miles north of the GW Bridge, we shall leave the trail and cross Rt. 9W to enter the Tenafly Nature Preserve. We will continue down the hill into Tenafly, walk past the home of a major figure in American history, and eventually end our walk at the Tenafly Diner. We shall take a bus back to Manhattan.
