Women's History - Half Day Walking Tour of Washington DC

The narrative of DC has been dominated by men - of the 40 plus monuments on the Mall, only one is dedicated to women's history - however the story of the city is littered with women who have impacted our lives. From the layout of the city streets to the great social movements of equality and freedom, women, some whom you may know and others you may not, have played a significant role. We will hear the tragic story of Mary Surratt and her alleged role in Lincoln's assassination, visiting her house which is now an unassuming Chinese restaurant. Learn why there are more than 50 churches on 16th Street and the pivotal role played by Mary Foote Henderson in the building of Gilded Age DC. We'll also explore the legend of Clara Barton, Civil War nurse, sanitation crusader and founder of the Red Cross. We may be still waiting for our first female President but we already have many great women to celebrate.
