Big Bend National Park Backroad - Full Day Tour

We cover about 50 miles, 80 kilometers of unpaved back road in Big Bend National Park. We visit two sites from the early 20th century: Glenn Springs, where a bandit raid in 1916 killed two soldiers and a young boy, and Mariscal Mine, an imposing industrial installation from around the turn of the 2oth century, literally in the middle of nowhere. Along the way there is a small archeological site with petroglyphs and rock mortars, dating back as much as 3000 years. Along the way we are treated to views of San Vicente Canyon, where the Rio Grande has carved a deep, vertical canyon. Most of the tour is in the low desert environment, and there are many interesting geological formations to arouse curiosity and amaze the senses.
