Benefit Street, the prestige address at the heart of Providence's East Side neighborhood, is a microcosm of the city's seventeenth-century development, later expansion, and contemporary culture. On this walking tour of the city's Mile of History, we'll enjoy everything from colonial architecture to contemporary art up close and appreciate how Providence's history has influenced life in the city today.
- Starting at the Roger Williams Visitor Center, we'll discuss Providence founding in 1636 and colonial infrastructure. - Moving up to Benefit Street, we'll marvel at the country's longest uninterrupted stretch of wood-framed colonial houses. - We'll explore the development of both Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, and the marks they've left on Providence's East Side. - We'll appreciate early Rhode Island's commitment to religious tolerance at architectural gems like the First Baptist and First Unitarian churches. This walking tour is the perfect complement to a campus visit or day in the city, and is fully customizable to your interests, and can be reconfigured as a driving tour. Please reach out if you are interested in adjusting the itinerary.
