Philadelphia is filled with the resting places of its deceased inhabitants. Since the city's founding in 1682, the living have built streets, subways, buildings, and parking lots over long-forgotten grave sites. As a result, unexpected encounters often occur when digging in the city. Embark on an eerie and enlightening journey through the forgotten graves of Old City Philadelphia. This experience promises to unveil surprising stories and may encourage a reconsideration of where one treads.
This two-hour exploration of the final resting places of some of Philadelphia's oldest residents begins at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington Square where we explore the park's history as a potters field. From there we travel through Independence National Historical Park, stopping for unexpected burial spots. We will go as far north as the National Constitution Center before finding our way to one of Philadelphia's most infamous forgotten burials across the street from Betsy Ross' House.
