South of Hilo is what we call the Puna district, there are some really great adventures to be had in and around the Puna area! Including, the black sand beach, the most recent lava flow that took many homes in the last eruption, and of course, my favorite part, the hot ponds. Before the lava flow of 2018, there was a massive Hot Pond (salt water heated by the volcano). Unfortunately, the lava took most of the hot ponds, in its place is a magnificent black sand beach, and there are still a few hot ponds left, especially if you know where to look. Did I mention that the drive to get there is STUNNING? And also has a few state recreational areas including Lava Tree! Where lava took over an old-growth forest and left a skeleton of lava trees in its place. This little half-mile loop trail is a great way to start our adventure in the lava fields! Enjoy the lava fields and step foot on some of the newest land Earth has to offer. See you on the Lava Fields!
