Old San Juan is one of the earliest European cities founded in the Caribbean and South America. It is rich in history, architecture and culture. Just last year the city turned 500 years old. For centuries, the city has been sought after by some of the most formidable empires to ever roam the earth: The Spanish, The French, The British, The Dutch and the United States, all tried (and some succeeded) to get their hands in control of the island. For centuries, battles where waged, invasions where launched and attacks where twarted, all in an attempt to take this city from the grasp of Spanish hands. But why did Spain hold on to this tiny piece of land with such incredible fervor? Why risk going to war with other world powers over this small island in the mouth of the caribbean that is no larger than 110 miles across and 40 miles wide? All this and much more you will learn with me as we walk thru some of the most picturesque sites the city has to offer. Don't miss out on this incredible activity!
We meet up in Plaza Colon. This is a great starting point as it used to be the one and only entrance in this once military city. From there I briefly discuss some of the fortifications the city has to protect it. In this tour we will not be going into El Morro Fortress, we visit but discuss it from the outside as there is much to see and talk about in other areas as well We make our way thru Calle Tetuan, into the heart of the city. Once we get to Plaza De Armas we will discuss some of the unique history of this plaza and its significance in the Puerto Rican Nationalist Struggle We will pass in front of the governor's mansion and there we can see the decorations they always have in the area After we go and take pictures in the famous 'Black Flag' representing the puerto rican struggle of the past and of now. After we visit both fortresses from the outside and discuss their military history After this tour you should have basic knowledge of Puerto Rican history, Why we are so desired, what we face today.
