Starting in Bowling Green park in lower Manhattan. We will walk via the old, narrow and once quaint streets, of Niew Amsterdam to The Gov Is ferry. Then the magnificent view of the Harbor, from the boat. The walking tour of the Island will then begin. Governors Island lies a few hundred yards off the southern tip of Manhattan. Where the Hudson River and the East Rivers meet, in New York Harbor. We will see the island's fortifications, Fort Jay and Castle Williams. They served as an early outpost to protect New York City from enemy naval attack. Part of a larger coastal and Harbor defense network. Governors Island was a military post for the US Army from 1794 until 1966. Then it was home to the U. S. Coast Guard, from 1966 to 2003. In 2003, the island was sold by the feds and transferred to two parties: 22 acres, designated as the Governors Island National Monument and The Trust for GI. Today, city and federal agencies are planning the future of this former military installation.
We will see these places. - Governor's Island. - NY Harbor. - Brooklyn, my home town. - WTC. - the Statue of Liberty, - Ellis Island, - Hudson River, - NJ, - Todt Hill, Staten Island, NYC's highest point. - Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, at the Narrows. Americas longest single span suspension bridge. (once the worlds longest, when it opened in 1964). - Upper Bay, - the Canyon of Heroes, 'ticker tape' Parade route. - the Bull, - Bowling Green Park. Ending back in lower Manhattan, downtown, after a return ferry ride.
