I've lived in New York City my entire life, and I'm still surprised by something new almost every day! And I'm not just talking about new developments that weren't around yesterday, I see things daily that are new to me but have been here for anywhere from 1 to 100 years. I love to share my New York discoveries with old and new friends. The Dutch arrived here in 1609, I actually have Dutch antecedents, not dating back that far but I have ancestry going back over 300 years in NYC. Of course you've heard of Wall Street, that's in the southernmost end of Manhattan, it's on the site of the wall the Dutch built on the northern edge of their city to protect themselves from the natives. The English came in 1664 and changed the name from New Amsterdam to New York, named for James the Duke of York who backed the expedition. We still exhibit a lot of Dutch influence though. 220 years, one revolution and one civil war later, the French gave us a lovely sculpture of the goddess Libertas which still graces our harbor!
We'll meet at your hotel, or I can pick you up at the airport or cruise ship terminal. We may start with a drive through Harlem (that was the Dutch name of the settlement in the northern reaches of Manhattan Island), then a stop at Central Park where we'll see the John Lennon Memorial directly across the street from the building in which he and Yoko lived until he was tragically gunned down outside of his home. Well continue to see; - Rockefeller Center - Times Square - Grand Central Terminal - The Empire State Building (of course) - Greenwich Village/ SoHo - Little Italy & Chinatown - The Brooklyn Bridge - Wall Street - The Statue of Liberty (not her real name) - The World Trade Center & 9/11 Memorial I will tell you many of the amazing yet true stories of this great city. New York City is really one of the greatest cities in world history, and I'll prove it to you! You'll see where all your favorite films and tv shows have been filmed and where our celebrities live and play. Come, let's have fun!
