Magazine Street is my favorite New Orleans street. This several-mile corridor has served our uptown communities' retail needs for nearly 2 centuries. From the Lower Garden District to "way" Uptown, Magazine Street offers funky and delightful shops, restaurants and bars, and keeps charming you, block after block. On either side of this fabulous New Orleans street, are the historic and charming neighborhoods of the wealthy and the weary, and we will wade into them too. Stroll with me through these very walkable, not crowded neighborhoods. We will meander along this historic local corridor that knitted together these contrasting communities, through the lovely Garden District of mansions and its incredible "ceiling of live oaks", as well as the humbler, immigrant neighborhoods of double shotguns and cottages, just blocks away across Magazine. Throughout, my expert commentary on the history, architecture and culture of New Orleans will help you put it all into context and inform the remainder of your visit.
-We will meet at a local pub on lower Magazine St for an overview of New Orleans' history, architecture and culture, before walking to a religious complex that is illustrative of New Orleans' lesser-known, but not insignificant 19th century immigrant gumbo. -Heading up on Magazine St. , we will discuss New Orleans' unusual local "compass", while enjoying—and sampling as desired—the eccentric boutiques, bars and cafes of this lovely promenade. -We will step into the Garden District of opulent mansions and magnificent oak canopy and contrast the lifestyles of New Orleans' wealthy Americans with that of the wealthy Creoles downtown. -Just across Magazine St, we will wander on the much humbler Irish Channel, whose densely packed double shotguns and cottages stand in contrast to the somewhat pastoral Garden District just a few blocks away. -Finally, we wrap up our journey at a local bar at the corner of Magazine and Napolean Ave for refreshment while I advise you on the remainder of your stay in New Orleans.
