I'll take you on an award-winning 2 hour stroll through the historic Old Town neighborhoods where I'll show you many of the beautiful, historic homes and unique architectural landmarks that have contributed significantly to the history, culture, and legends of our celebrated island community. This tour visits several prominent, historic neighborhood streets. We'll learn the island's fascinating history and see the exteriors of a variety of beautiful homes and buildings, each with its own story, notable history, and rich style. We will talk about our famous families, the celebrated mansions of Old Town, why we have "Bahama Houses", the city's historic preservation work, the lasting impacts of the 1846 Hurricane and Great Fire of 1886, why we have "eyebrow" houses, the superstitions reflected in design features, and the uniquely necessary architectural elements used to combat heat, termites, and hurricanes.
We start at the beautiful, celebrated Customs House. From there, we make our way ¾ of a mile to the heart of historic, Old Town Key West. Along the tour, we'll see the exteriors of many of Key West's most beautiful, historic homes and landmarks- each with distinct history, deep-rooted legends and many with unique architectural features and designs. We'll stroll by and discuss the history of: •The Geiger-Audubon House •The Old Customs House •Truman's Little White House •The Presidential Gates •Pan American Airline's first office •The Captain George Carey Home (aka Jesse Porter Heritage House and Robert Frost Cottage) •Dr. Joseph Yates Porter's home (pivotal in the yellow fever epedimic) •The stunning Curry-Amsterdam Mansion •Casa Antigua (Hemingway's first residence where he penned A Farewell to Arms) •The art-deco triumph of the old Masonic Temple •The stunning octagonal design of the Richard Peacon House (aka The Calvin Klein House) •The magnificent Freeman-Curry Mansion •The John Bartlum's "Bahama" House
