Fredrick Church wrote "For several seasons after I selected Olana as my home, I thought of hardly anything but planting trees and had thousands and thousands of them (planted) on the Southern and Northern slopes. Imagine this very fairly-like Temple blazing like sunlight among those savage black rocks. " Inspired by his visit to the Middle East in the 1860's, eminent Hudson River school artist Fredrick Church build this Persia-style mansion and art studio on 250 acres with commanding views of the Hudson Valley. This 12 year building project remains one of the most splendid and intact artist - design properties in the United States. Olana is his greatest artistic masterpiece. Upon graduation from Architecture school and as an art history teacher, followed by a long visit to the Middle East, I was awe struck by Church's magnificent Middle eastern styled masterpiece. My visit to Olana left me speechless. I can hardly wait to walk its halls and share its majestic grounds and Valley vista views with you!!
