We have a permit to enter Haleakala National Park, where I worked for 9 years, including 2 years as a National Park Service ranger.

I learned to drive in Los Angeles, California, navigating the freeway system there, and later moved here where I gained expertise in driving the famously winding Road to Hana (3 years) and also the "road to the sun" at Haleakala. I'll take the wheel so you can enjoy the amazing views as we gain altitude, with plenty of stops so you can share your shots with your social circle.

After a no-host lunch at a local cafe, we'll drive down and into the other volcano that makes up our island, entering a green lush valley with a beautiful stream (like the Road to Hana without having to do the Road to Hana!) and your choice of observing, wading, swimming, and/or jumping in!

Private Birdwatching at Haleakala National Park

If you want to see the "real" Hawaiian forest birds and have a positive identification, I'm the guide for you! We have a permit to enter Haleakala National Park, where I worked for 9 years, including 2 years as a National Park Service ranger. I have been a birdwatcher since the age of 9 and look forward to showing you the beautiful birdlife of Maui. When I first visited Hawaii (Waikiki), the first bird I noticed was the striking Red-Crested Cardinal, but I wondered why I didn't see any of the birds on the "Native Hawaiian birds" page of my Peterson Field Guide. When I moved to Maui and visited the national park with a guide and got to see my first bright red 'I'iwi, I finally knew what I wanted to be when I grow up--a ranger/naturalist--to "infect" others with love and care for these unique beautiful creatures! We will spend a good amount of time at the park and then also include a wetlands stop and a golf course with a surprising number of introduced species.

This is so true of the Road to Hana! We don't just drive there and back, we stop many times along the way to jump in waterfalls, walk in the rainforest, explore lava tubes, swim at a black sand beach, eat banana bread, and much more!

Amazing Road to Hana Full-Day Tour

Get away from the crowds on the roads and paved paths and get into the landscape. . . The legends of the volcano goddess Pele and the geological story of Maui island unroll before your feet as you hike into Haleakala Crater.

When I first went on a hike led by a national park guide in 2000, I finally knew what I wanted to do with my life! So I volunteered and then worked at Haleakala for nine years as a park interpreter, including two years as a National Park Service ranger.

I would love to share my experience with the park to enhance your experience of the park, gearing to your pace and interests. We will hike in another area of the park, as well, to experience a completely different habitat, and species, for a diverse day in the unique native environments of Hawaii.

I provide a picnic lunch for the trail, hiking poles, guidance, first aid if needed, bottled water, snacks and beverages, ponchos and light backpacks if needed--and plenty of photo opps!

Hiking at Haleakala National Park

I've been exploring the Hawaiian islands for 28 years, and professionally since 2016, which is right around the time I discovered this place. I loved my first experience here, and continued going back to become more familiar with it before offering it as an experience. I now have extensive experience taking more adventurous type families here.

Spend no time in the car and all of your time exploring waterfalls in the forest of Mauna Kahalawe, Maui's oldest extinct volcano. There are several tier levels throughout these mountains, so this unique hike I offer explores two of those tier levels. Part of this hiking tour is the road less traveled, and depending on season or day of the week, the entire journey can feel that way.

This adventure tour involves hiking through a dirt trail that weaves in and out of a lava rock/boulder stream, so includes dry, sometimes wet lava rock hopping.

Minimum Age 9/Maximum age 65.
(Moderately Difficult w/Technical Abilities/Experienced Hikers or Active and Fit Types only).

Spend less time in the car and more time exploring gems off the Road to Hana, unwinding in Maui's incredible nature vs. being time sensitive to road travel and the most popular destinations. Includes hiking on uneven terrain, lava rock hopping to waterfalls for swimming, crossing rocky streams, a local black sand beach, the beautiful peninsula town, Keanae, local food and snack stands. As a result, you do NOT drive to Hana! 

Some activities are for experienced hikers or active types that are fit, with a minimum age of 9 and a maximum age of 65.
