Downtown New York City has always been a fertile ground for art, music, theater, radical politics, and alternative lifestyles. On a personal note, I ran a small "Off-Off Broadway, alternative, performance space on the Lower East Side for 10 years during the 90s and aughts. That experience gives me a sense of history, perspective, and a passion I would like to share with you. I'll shine a light on some of the people, places, and events that made downtown New York an international counter-cultural capital that changed the city, the nation, and the world. On this tour, we'll explore DaDa, the birth of the beats, the folk revival, hippies & Yippies, "Happenings", the birth of "Off-Off Broadway", the sexual revolution, Gay Liberation, Pop Art, the explosion of Punk Rock, and the all-important cross-fertilization between those many scenes. This tour is a celebration of creativity. As Lou Reed sang, "Let's take a walk on the wild side. "
·We'll start by meeting at the Arch in Washington Square Park, from where we'll take in Judson Church and the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory. ·Next, we'll walk with Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Bruce, Andy Warhol, and other stars and visit the sites of past and present iconic nightclubs, bars, coffee shops, and theatres in Greenwich Village. This include the Stonewall Bar where Gay Liberation was born and the place where Andy Warhol's Factory was in Union Square. ·We'll later proceed to visit Webster Hall and St. Mark's Church on the Bowery. ·Afterwards, we'll walk along the steps of Andy Warhol, Alan Ginsberg, Abbie Hoffman, Patti Smith, and other Downtown legends as we visit St. Mark's Place, La Mama, and the back alley behind CBGB's. ·We'll then take in graffiti murals in the East Village. ·Next, we'll see Basquiat's studio and the site of Justus Schwab's Anarchist saloon. ·We'll end the tour at Pfaff's saloon where America's first bohemian salon took place.
