The Music History of Music City

Here we will walk three different areas of the city, tieing in the history of the past with what is currently happening today. Nashville's ride has been a roller coaster experience, to say the least. I will join you on this ride as we explore the SoBro district, named because of its location south of Broadway. This area is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Walk of Fame park.

We will then venture over to what locals call Lower Broad, where Honky Tonks reign. Not only will you learn why they are called Honky Tonks but we will get to experience a couple of the most famous ones on the strip. The music will draw us in and what these walls have seen and heard, well I will tell you.

Then just steps away is the waterfront and second avenue a different vibe altogether. This area is home to Fort Nashboro where we will talk about the settling of the city and how we got our name.

After a visit to Printers Alley, we will end at the Ryman Auditorium the most famous building downtown.

Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum recognizes musicians for their contributions to the music industry.

Channel 5 TV Station in Nashville. Original home of "Hee-Haw" television series. This is also where a young lady known today as Oprah Winfrey began her career. As a young reporter, she often came to our office in the Vice Squad of the MPD seeking a story.

RCA Victor Recording Studio - Home of numerous recorded albums over the years with too many artists to name. Just a few would include Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, George Strait, Joe Cocker, Tony Bennett, the Monkees, and even William Shatner of Star Trek fame.

RCA Studio B - Over a thirteen year span, Elvis recorded over 250 songs in this building which was initially built for him to record in 1957. Inside you will find a broken cabinet door which Elvis kicked in.

This bronze statue of Owen Bradley sits in a small public park named after him at the end of Music Row.

Musica - was created for this roundabout at Music Row to celebrate all genres of music. The 40' bronze statue depicts 5 clearly male and 4 clearly female nude dancers. At the time of installation , many churches protested it. Most Nashvillians still refer to it as the "Naked Ladies Statue".

Parthenon - Full scale replica of the Athenian temple built in 1897 in support of Nashville's proclamation of being the "Athens of the South". It was a highlight of the 1900 Centennial Celebration.

Jesse James' House - This is one of the homes the notorious outlaw Jessie James actually lived in during his stay in Nashville from 1876 to 1881. It is still being occupied today.

Installed in 2007, the Ghost Ballet for the East Bank Machineworks is located on the east bank of the Cumberland River. It is 100' x 100' x 60'. Most Nashvillians refer to it as the Roller Coaster.

Roy Acuff's Tombstone - Interesting note is that Roy died one evening and was buried by the next morning with very few people in attendance. His wish for it to be handled in this manner was because he did not want anyone to be sad at his funeral.

Come explore this artsy and eclectic side of Nashville. Known to locals as east nasty because of its checkered past, this historic area is the home to small music venues, specialty restaurants, and hip speakeasies. This side of the river also offers many photo opportunities with its many murals.

This is not your cookie-cutter-type neighborhood. What I love about East Nashville is all the great architecture of the homes here, from victorian to craftsmen we will see so many different styles.

We will walk the historic 5 points area with its unique bars and restaurants, as well as the Fatherland District, with its artsy craft and gift shops. This is still part of Music City and yes there is plenty of that to talk about as well when we go past the Woodland Recording Studio. Let's take a look at one of the many speakeasies this area has to offer and talk about prohibition. Be ready with your phone or camera as we will be on the lookout for the many different murals in this neighborhood.
