Flamingo was once a remote fishing village, but today it's the southernmost district of Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of my favourite things about Flamingo is that every winter, osprey (also known as sea hawks) build their nests near the Marina and all along the coast of Florida Bay. Actually, photographers from all over the world come to document this! In order to reach Flamingo, we have the fortune of needing to go through Everglades National Park, the only place in the world where manatees, crocodiles & alligators coexist, and where the butterfly diversity is spectacular. We'll drive along a scenic paved road that runs through pinewoods, tropical hardwood hammocks, mangrove swamps & sawgrass prairies! So prepare for wonderful encounters with endangered wildlife (butterflies, raptors, wading birds, turtles and more). I created this private tour itinerary inspired by my excursions with friends naturalists and film directors documenting the Everglades.
•After a morning pickup, we’ll depart to Florida City, where we’ll do a short stop to enjoy the best local fruit milkshakes. •Our 2nd stop will be at Ernest F Coe Visitor’s Center, which showcases audiovisuals about Everglades, as well as exhibits by local artists & even a bookstore. •Next, we’ll continue on a scenic drive towards Florida Bay’s Flamingo Marina, getting to do a few stops, such as in Pa Hay Okee Trail, which has a raised observation platform to see the Everglade’s River of Grass. •We’ll then arrive to Flamingo and stop by Guy Bradley Visitor Center, which also has a book shop & an educational exhibit. •Later, we’ll continue along the Flamingo Marina and pass by The Marina Store which sells mementos, drinks & snacks. •At the Marina, you can choose to do either a Catamaran trip through Florida Bay or a Backcountry Boat Tour, where an expert naturalist will highlight the region’s birds & sea life for us! •At last, we can have a meal at Flamingo Lodge restaurant before returning.
