Explore two historic American estates with a guided tour that bridges heroic narratives and the solemn realities of the past. At Mount Vernon, once a prosperous farm operated by George Washington, delve into the untold stories of the enslaved African Americans whose labor enriched the estate. Led by a guide descended from those enslaved at Mount Vernon, this tour highlights the resilience and contributions of these individuals, providing a fuller understanding of American history. Then, visit Arlington National Cemetery, a site of national remembrance and the final resting place of notable figures, including presidents and veterans. Witness the poignant Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and explore Arlington House, the former home of Robert E. Lee, which has served various roles from plantation to military headquarters. This tour profoundly reflects on America's complex history, honoring its leaders and its often-overlooked contributors.
On this full-day tour, visitors will tour the Mount Vernon Mansion House, visit the interactive museum, and walk the grounds while hearing about the President's daily workday and how he managed the plantation. Other points of interest include Gardens and Grounds, Washington's Tomb, the Museum and Education Center, and the Enslaved Burial Ground. At Arlington National Cemetery, see the Kennedy Graves, the Supreme Court Justices, graves of distinguished veterans, and heroes like Audie Murphy, Lee Marvin, and others. Visit Arlington House, where Robert E. Lee married Mary Custis Lee, and their 7 children were born. Witness the solemn ceremony of the Changing of the Guards. In addition to the Kennedy family, President William Howard Taft, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, world champion boxer Joe Louis, the seven Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts and the Tuskegee Airmen are also buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
