Some locals call this the best "dam" hike in Cody! Maybe because it's the only hike to a dam in town, but it's arguably the best hike as well. This 3 hour nature and scenic walk/hike is guaranteed to show you both the most fascinating manmade and the most stunning natural sites in Cody! Step back in time to the year 1900. The early settlers of this area used horse-drawn carriages to drive this very path from Cody to Yellowstone National Park. It's now closed to public traffic, paved, and is a popular walking/hiking path for locals. Thousands of Yellowstone tourists will drive right by this hidden gem and never know it's there. . . but with me, you will! I'll take you to see the sensational Shoshone River, impressive bridges, rock and cliff formations and sheer rock walls that are some of the oldest on the planet! At one point, we'll look up and maybe get to gaze in awe and fright at rock climbers who frequent this area. Ever been near the base of a dam? You will on this hike.
·First, we'll park at or meet directly at the historic Hayden Arch Bridge in order to begin our tour on an easy, gentle-sloped, paved path. ·As soon as we begin, we'll find ourselves admiring the local flora and soaking in all the glory of the Shoshone River and its roaring rapids. ·We'll proceed to observe the impressive bridge above us, plus the massive high cliffs and rock formations all around. ·As we go on, you'll notice that with every step, the canyon narrows, and the rock walls get closer. ·Eventually, we'll appreciate how the canyon walls close in on us, so we'll be able to reach out & touch some of Earth's oldest rock. ·Next, it'll be a great moment to admire & discuss the 2-billion-year-old geology and formation of this natural wonder. ·We'll then continue through the rock tunnel and down to the river's edge for a close-up view of Buffalo Bill Dam. ·At last, we'll return the same way for a total of 3. 75 miles round trip with easy-moderate 530-feet elevation gain/loss.
