A short drive from downtown Cody brings us to this nearby outdoor adventure playground! This is one of my personal favorite local hikes, and that's saying something, considering I've been at it for over 2 decades! This particular one happens to be not too long, not too short, plus not too difficult or too far away. Within minutes of civilization, we'll be immersed in nature, breathing the fresh mountain air, seeing some memorable, incredible sights and getting a nice little workout. This spirited 6-mile loop route takes us through Cody's beautiful sage, juniper, and red rock country. If we're lucky, we will see some wildlife, as well. It's hard to stop taking pictures on this tour, so be sure you have enough space on your smartphone. This tour is such a delightful snapshot of the nature side of Cody. It's a wonderful brief retreat from town and recharges you for the remainder of your vacation.
·We'll begin our trek by wandering alongside a seasonal creek through a flat terrain where we'll warm up amongst shady cottonwoods, scanning the area for deer and antelope! ·Next, we'll slowly ascend to a plateau above the creek bed. This gentle, rolling trail section is covered with grass, wildflowers & fragrant sage brush. ·We'll then reach the rim of this flat section, cautiously peek over the cliff edge and take in the stunning panoramic 360-degree views of Cody's front range mountains. ·At this half-way point, our hiking adventure is truly just starting! From here, we'll walk an easy ridge, around countless boulders & sandstone rock formations. ·Then reaching our peak elevation gain of 721-feet, we'll be rewarded with a prize. . . a large natural sandstone arch. ·Next, we'll safely skirt the edge of a rocky cliff edge, with plenty of picture-worthy stops. ·Nearing the end, we meander a forest of juniper trees & more sandstone rocks, before descending to the trailhead and completing our adventure!
