Strolling through the generations of Charleston History, you will learn about the society, scoundrels and conflicts that define this great city. Charleston's influence was felt throughout the world and her buildings, quaint streets, hidden alleys, and picturesque gardens all have stories to tell. We will explore her 350 years of history. From the eras of the Lord Proprietors, Colony Charles Towne, Antebellum Charleston, the Reconstruction years, and the Charleston Renaissance. We will meet those that made Charleston what she is today: The Barbadians, the Enslaved, the Scottish, the Irish, the Germans, the Jewish, the French Huguenots, the English, the Preservationists, and the Artists. We will hear about those outside forces that molded her: Wars, Earthquakes, Hurricanes and Fires. As DuBose Heyward would say in his poem "Dusk" "Life after Life, up from her first beginning- How can I think of her in wood and stone!"
Some of the highlights we will see: St. Michal's Church Rainbow Row St. Philip's Church Hibernian Hall Dock Street Theater The Old Slave Mart Circular Church Graveyard Philip Simmons Ironwork The itinerary can be customized to your interests. We walk about a mile and a half. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water, and use the restroom before the tour starts. Sorry, there are no restrooms on the tour.
