Overview of your Charleston tour:

Learn about Charleston's magnificent ironwork while strolling through the lovely historic district. Many early ironworks were destroyed in raging fires and many noteworthy gates and fences were donated to the Confederate cause to be melted down for cannonballs and "skins" for the ironclad boats. But, even with the losses, the city retains a wealth of impressive ironworks. Hear the story of Philip Simmons, Charleston's most famous ironworker, and of earlier blacksmiths who crafted beautiful pieces of art throughout the city.

Your Charleston tour itinerary

We will walk through the neighborhoods South of Broad to see: - the iron works of German Ironworkers such as Christopher Warner - African American Philip Simmons. If you are interested in visiting Philip Simmons Blacksmith shop, I can arrange that for you. That would be a different location. Transportation to that location and entrance fee to the foundry are not part of the walking tour. We walk about a mile and a half. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a bottle of water, and use the restroom before the tour starts. Sorry, there are no restrooms on the tour.
