This tour provides a look into Charleston city and country life - all on the same day! You will learn the cultural values of those who were city residents and how their interests and views often differed from their aristocratic, plantation-class neighbors. While their views on war & peace often differed, it can be said all Charlestonians aspired to live a gracious and charming life. Even thousands of enslaved worked hard to earn the money to buy their freedom. Once freed, freemen were among the most ambitious in the city. By understanding what motivated Charlestonians to create such a gracious life, you will gain an even greater appreciation for Charleston's beauty. A beauty now restored to its pre-civil war grandeur. A cultural, architectural, and natural beauty recognized by today's leading travel publications - who vote Charleston year after year as Best City USA! With a B.A. in British Civilization, I look forward to sharing how Charleston became the jewel of British Colonial and Antebellum America.
·We will begin this tour with pick-up from your downtown location, after which we'll embark on an overview of Charleston's historic district by car. ·You'll see Charleston's oldest and loveliest neighborhoods with a focus on the French Quarter and the South of Broad District, including the Battery. ·Next, we'll leave the city and drive for approximately 25 minutes to Boone Hall Plantation. ·Along our way there, I will prepare you for what you will see on arrival to the plantation. ·Once there, you will take in the rare brick slave cabins and see the cotton loading dock adjacent to the tidal creek and marsh. ·You will then experience the one of a kind outdoor Gullah theatre where you will hear directly from a Gullah presenter about the lives of the Gullah people during slavery. You will also be able to join in by singing famous Gullah songs such as "Down By The Riverside" and learn their meaning. ·At last, we'll drive back to your downtown drop-off spot to end of the tour.
