This is a two hour walking tour. Walk the campus of Harvard University, America's oldest institution of higher learning founded in 1636. See the stately architecture in Harvard Yard and see where famous politicians, actors and business people spent their first year as "freshmen". Just across the street from the campus, we begin to see sites relating to the American Revolutionary War. George Washington took command of the American Army on the Cambridge Common in July 1775 and worshipped in the church across the street. Walk along Brattle Street or "Tory Row" with its stately homes, many of which were abandoned by the Loyalist "Tories" at the outbreak of the war in 1774 and 1775 and Washington took the best house for himself! The tour terminates in Harvard Square where there are bookstores, restaurants and coffeeshops for every taste and budget!
Tour begins and ends at the Harvard University Smith Center where there are restrooms, water fountains, the Harvard University Information Office and eateries. Proceed into Harvard Yard, see freshman dormitories, classroom, libraries and administrative offices. Exit the yard and cross the street to the Cambridge Common, see where Washington took command of the troops in 1775. Proceed through Radcliffe Yard (the women's counterpart to Harvard before integration) and on to Brattle Street, the most distinguished residential street in the city! Optional, walk back to Harvard Square along the Charles River, maybe we'll see university (rowing) crews practicing. Back to the Smith Center or the MBTA Red Line subway train back to Boston.
