What could you do about poor eyesight in the 18th Century? Why would there be a military railway so close to both the river and the edge of the City? An opportunity to leave the hustle and bustle of the City behind us and enjoy the New Walk created in the 1730's to help gentrify York and boost its appeal as a Georgian tourist destination. Find out who made a significant contribution in establishing how cholera was spread and how a remarkable connection with another prominent Victorian is made. The riverside in York served an industrial purpose and we shall look at how the operation and support for this was provided. Flooding is an ongoing reality and we look in detail at the defences.
On our tour we will see; - 14TH Century Church - The three main Bridges of York, Lendal, Ouse, Skeldergate plus the Millenium Bridge - Flooding in York, the problem and the defences. - The New Walk, - The remains of a military railway. - Cholera, its presence in York. - The Pikeing Well - The Bonding Warehouse - A pleasant riverside walk with good views and river activity throughout Please note this tour can be customised.
