Join me on a gentle stroll around the expanse of Plymouth Hoe and the old medieval town of Plymouth, take in views across the waters of the Sound which is going to be the first UK marine park, and learn about the rebuilding of the modern city after the devastation of the Blitz in the 1940's. As a city, I feel that Plymouth UK is often overlooked, we are off the beaten track from the usual honeypots of tourist must dos. From the classic 1950's architecture of the rebuilt city, to the scenic grandeur of the expanse of the Hoe, Plymouth never fails to surprise visitors. I have been guiding around the City for many years and am still finding new things to talk about, such as our revamped museum, The Box. I just spent a whole day in there reacquainting myself with all the fabulous stories that the City has to offer. As we stand on the Hoe, we can imagine the brave people setting off into to their new worlds, the 100's of wrecks below the waves, or those who sail off to one of the various local and world conflicts
Our starting point will be Plymouth Hoe with its wonderful panorama looking out towards the English Channel • We will walk along the Hoe Promenade taking in all the stories and views • As we make our way down to the oldest part of the town of Plymouth, its conservation area of the Barbican, we pass a wonderful 17th century fortress, the Royal Citadel • Reaching the Mayflower steps, which commemorate the sailing of the Pilgrims in September 1620, the clues about the growth of Plymouth during Elizabethan times are seen in the old buildings around Sutton Pool. • We can include a visit to the famous Gin Distillery which is also one of the many eating and watering holes in this vibrant area of the city • Our tour can also continue up to the main shopping area of the city and the Minster church of St Andrew, gutted by bombs in the 1940's and now with amazing stained glass windows.
