Christ Church it known for inspiring and being part of Harry Potter locations but it's history tells many tales. John Locke, Robert peel and 13 prime ministers were here and it buildings and decorative arts include world class treasures. From the Venetian Gothic entry, meadows sweep down to the Thames where the real Alice set off on her adventures to Wonderland The college chapel is, uniquely, the city cathedral and has been a holy place Oxford's 8th century patron Saint St Frideswide Christchurch was founded in the Tudor era, requisitioned from a Medieval abbey, The hall once hosted Elizabeth I, Charles I and even Parliament. Latterly it was the inspiration for Harry Potter's school Hall. Lewis Carroll hangs among the portraits of other illustrious members.
Christ Church Highlights: Memorial Garden – Opened to the public after WWI. Meadow – Where Lewis Carroll found inspiration for Alice in Wonderland. Bodley Tower & Staircase – Featured in Harry Potter as Hogwarts' entrance. Great Hall – Built by the 'disgraced' Cardinal Wolsey, adorned with portraits of prime ministers, philosophers, and more. Stained glass of historical interest. Tom Quad Bell Tower – Designed by Christopher Wren, 'England’s Michelangelo'. The Cathedral: Stained Glass – Medieval (12th-century, incl. Thomas Becket), Gothic Revival, Pre-Raphaelite. Architecture – Norman & early Gothic, with a 15th-century lierne vaulted ceiling. Monuments – English Civil War era. Other Features – Cloister, Chapter House, Victorian discoveries.
