On 30th January 1649, a crowd of thousands gathered in central London. They were here to witness one of the most scandalous events in British history, the public execution of a reigning monarch. The monarch in question was King Charles I, and this walking tour charts the events surrounding this ill-fated King in the weeks and months running up to his appointment with the man who would end his life. You'll hear stories about: • Why the monarch isn't allowed to enter the House of Commons • Why Members of Parliament sit two sword lengths apart • How King Charles I fell out with Parliament • How Guy Fawkes spoiled his executioner's big day • The woman who kept her husband's severed head in a glass case for twenty years • Which queen was known as "the Popish brat of France" Join me on this walk and soak up the unique atmosphere of St James's and Westminster
I will meet you outside Green Park Underground Station on the south side of Piccadilly. We will then walk through the elegant streets of St James's as we hear about the circumstances leading up to the fateful day. We will then make our way towards Westminster through picturesque St James's Park which provides a perfect opportunity to admire the wildlife in this stunning park that used to be a royal hunting ground. We will see some of London's most iconic sights including Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) and Westminster Abbey. Our tour will end up in Whitehall which contains numerous government buildings and is home to Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister. We will finish at the beautiful 17th century Banqueting House, which was where King Charles I finally lost his head, leading to eleven years with this country without a reigning king or queen.
