Welcome to the City of London! I'm lucky enough to live right here in the Square Mile and I can't...

Join me on a book lover's tour of the City of London – the oldest part of London and a neighbourhood that has inspired some of the UK's most famous writers. We'll explore some of the locations where writers such as Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare lived and worked, as well as discovering literary inspiration in some unexpected places. You'll pass by some well-known locations from English literature, from the tree that inspired a Wordsworth poem to Scrooge's workplace; see monuments to great names including the poet John Donne; and discover the area that formed the heart of the publishing world in centuries gone by. Inspired to get reading? There will be plenty of opportunity to browse for books along the way, or to have a drink in one of Dickens' favourite watering holes.
Our walk begins at Barbican underground station – considered London's unluckiest station, it inspired a poem by John Betjeman. The route will include: - the site where Shakespeare lived (and wrote King Lear) - the tree that sparked a Wordsworth poem - Charles' Dickens' old haunts, and the locations from some of his most famous novels - the churchyard of St Paul's Cathedral - Fleet Street – the home of British newspapers for centuries. Samuel Pepys the diarist was born near here. - Samuel Johnson's house (exterior) We'll finish near the Inns of Court, close to one of London's most famous historic literary pubs. The route can be customised on request.
