The City of London is the original London founded by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. It's also known as the 'Square Mile' as it's only one mile across but it's packed full of history making it one of the most interesting places to visit in London. Today it is also one of London's main financial centres, meaning that tall, glass modern buildings rub shoulders with Roman ruins, mediaeval churches and Victorian buildings. The city has seen two great tragedies in its long history, with large parts destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666 and then again by the bombing of London during the Blitz of World War II from 1940-1941. Nonetheless it is packed full of clues of London's past, with ancient churches, inns and mediaeval coffee shops, where early traders did their business. After the Great Fire it was rebuilt on the same mediaeval footprint, so it these places are all linked by winding alleyways and passages. Our walk will take in all of this and more - a great way to start your trip to London!
We'll start at the heart of the City of London where we'll see the Bank of England, where one fifth of all the world's gold is stored. We'll also see the Mansion House, the grand residence of the City's ceremonial head, the Lord Mayor, a position that dates back over 800 years. We'll walk from there to see Leadenhall Market. There has been a market there since Roman times but the current spectacular setting dates to Victorian times. It is also where Hagrid took Harry Potter to buy his first wand in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. We'll go past some of the 50 churches built by our great architect Christopher Wren after the Great Fire and his crowning glory, St Paul's Cathedral, its great dome one of the architectural landmarks of London and the country. It is famous from the feeding the birds song in Mary Poppins and also as where Prince Charles married Lady Diana in 1981. We'll hear stories of bodysnatchers and knights, market traders and kings and even see remains from the old Roman city.
