Overview of your Edinburgh tour:

Come along with me on a tour of Edinburgh's New Town. And don't be deceived! We call it new, but it was started in 1767 - it's just newer than our Old Town. As an overcrowded and walled medieval city Edinburgh badly needed to expand, and after about 200 years of procrastination they finally did. With a grid system, sweeping boulevards, and luxuries like sewers, Edinburgh joined the modern era in one sudden jump, earning the ambitious nickname "The Athens of the North". Let me show you around some of the best known parts, and some of the least known of Edinburgh's New Town.

Your Edinburgh tour itinerary

From a basic overview of how the New Town grew out of the Old, we'll proceed down to: - The Balmoral Hotel, and how the railways shaped Scotland's cities and towns - St Andrew Square, and the Dundas family's influence - The National Portrait gallery, and its sponsor - The Scott Monument, and how much Sir Walter Scott affected modern Scottish culture - James Clerk Maxwell, and other figures of the Scottish Enlightenment - The Georgian architecture of the New Town, the foundations of the world's first fire service, the Scottish White House, a bear that was a hero in the Polish Army in WWII, and more

Meeting location

20 North Bridge, Scotland, EH1 1TR United Kingdom

We'll meet outside the main entrance of the Scotsman Hotel. It's technically in the Old Town, but we're about two minutes away walking from the New Town, and it gives us a nice overview of the area, and a good place to do a little introduction. But if it's easier I can happily meet you somewhere else around the city centre.

  • You can request a different meeting location (for example, your hotel) during the checkout process.
