Londonderry, the last walled city to be built in Europe, stands as the most complete and spectacular. It is part of a long European tradition of walled cities - it is really a city with walls around it rather than a heavily fortified citadel'. In 1604 King James the VI and I granted a charter for 'the town or borough of the Derrie being, by its natural state and situation, very commodious, and fit to a towne of warre and merchandise'. The Walls of Derry, constructed between 1613 1618, are of course the most enduring legacy of the Plantation of Ulster. Still intact today, they are the only complete early modern walls in Ireland and Britain. Based on the model of Vitry le Francois at a time of European expansion, the plans were also used as a template to design Philadelphia. The walls were needed in earnest on at least three occasions suffering investments and sieges during the 17th century including the 'Great Siege' of 1688-9 as part of a European
We begin our tour at Bishop's Gate, a triumphal arch commemorating the Great Siege of 1688-9 and gain an overview of the history of the city. We continue to Hangman's Bastion and marvel at the unique set of cannon which defended the city and discover how this siege was part of a European conflict. Continuing along the walls and overlooking the Bogside, we hear how they played a role in the modern Troubles Leaving the Walls we have an optional visit to the Siege Museum or continue to St. Columb's Cathedral the grounds of which hold the graves of some of the many thousands who died in the War of the Three Kings We then walk through the historic walled city stopping at the Guildhall before continuing to the Bogside for an account of how the Troubles impacted on the people of the city The itinerary is flexible, for any changes please let me know.
