Canterbury has been at the heart of the history of England for over 2, 000 years and many of the kings and queens through the ages have come here. I will show you places associated with the Saxons and the Vikings, as well as the famous buildings associated with King Henry 11, the Plantagenets and the Tudor and Stuart dynasties. The Tudors in particular have left a very strong legacy in Canterbury and the Christchurch Gate is particularly famous. During your personal guided tour of the Cathedral you will see the tombs of King Henry 1V and The Black Prince and hear of their special relationship. . . We will visit the altar of the swordpoint, the site of Thomas Becket's martyrdom and learn how King Henry 11 came to Canterbury to do penance for his murder. The Elizabethan 'Strangers' houses and the welcome they received from Elizabeth 1st. Explore literary figures who had Royal connections, for example Geoffrey Chaucer and Christopher Marlowe and their place in Canterbury history.
Our tour can start at various points in Canterbury, but if you are coming by train I will meet you at Canterbury West Railway Station. If you are staying in Canterbury I can meet you at your hotel. The tour is as follows: - 1 hour walk to include various buildings, sites and statues with Royal connections. - 1. 5 hour visit to the Cathedral and precincts. I am trained and endorsed by the Cathedral to give private tours and this allows me to give you a seamless tour of the city and the Cathedral. - After your visit to the Cathedral we continue with a walking tour. The itinerary will depend on whether you are returning to the station or continuing your visit to Canterbury. Please note this tour can be customised.
