Let's venture into the capital of the Carthaginian empire, also known as the nightmare of Rome, Master of the sea. Carthage was built by the Phoenicians in 814 B. C. , motherland of the famous navigators Hannon & Himilcon, plus the generals Amilcar, Hasdrubal & Hannibal Barca, a statesman renowned for its technical brilliance which allowed him to overpower the Roman Empire in battle. Yet as powerful as the city was, it was destroyed by the Romans and by the Arabs in different time periods, expected to never rise again . . . but it resurrected and returned to being the most important city in North Africa! On our tour, we'll see the Byrsa quarter, built by Hannibal in 195 B. C, where some of the best preserved ruins are. In the VIIth century, Carthage was used as quarry for stone & marble, and it's now one of the most important UNESCO listed archaeological sites. Let me share the amazing history of Carthage with you, a beautiful mixture between the Punic people and the Christians (Romans & Byzantines).
·After we've gathered, we'll start our tour by visiting Byrsa hill, where you'll admire the most beautiful view as well as some monuments that date back to Punic era. ·Then we'll visit the beautiful quarter of the luxurious Roman Villas. ·Next, we'll visit the Antonine baths, the 3rd largest thermal complex from the Roman Empire . ·Afterwards, we'll head to the Punic port areas, seeing both the military & the commercial ports, which date back to the period of time in between the IVth & IIth centuries before Christ. ·We'll later pass by The Tophet, a punic sanctuary and one of the oldest monuments in Carthage. ·We'll finish the tour after admiring monuments as well as hills & sea views. This tour can be customized to your preferences, and we could optionally include more landmarks such as the Carthage Theatre, the Water Pools and a Basilica from the Roman Empire times. We could also do this as a walking tour if you preferred, but this would considerably extend its duration.
